Karima Mansour

What does it mean for a person to switch off and refuse to perform a mechanical role, like an error in a machine that will produce faults all the way down the production line? To assimilate or vanish into a mass, to insist on retaining only the bare minimum of a defined identity, and to believe that disappearing is a way to avoid defining one’s identity? A perpetual sense of disorientation after the fragmentation produced by the confrontation produced by that error.
A clear commitment to the ritual creates a familiarity out of repetition and redoing—a familiarity which is difficult for the individual to transcend or break through, creating a subsequent desire for continuity even if continuity is monotonous and exhausting, and the successive defeats which accompany it —not because of it, but in parallel with it— create a state of fragmentation.
